Born in Siem Reap, Pao Piseth started working at Rambutan in 2011 as a receptionist. He is now the Assistant Manager and says Rambutan gave him the chance to learn new things and grow into his role.
Where are you from?
I’m from the Pouk district and I grew up in a family of eight. Now I live with my wife and son in Siem Reap.
What is it like to work at Rambutan?
I used to work as a general laborer on different construction projects. My brother was a driver at Rambutan and recommended me for a job here. I applied to work in the laundry, but they didn’t have a laundry department, so I joined the maintenance team. I like that there is a lot of teamwork and I enjoy being part of a team. I’ve also gained a lot of experience. When I came here, I knew nothing, but I’ve developed a lot. They also sent me to school to learn about electricity, carpentry, and other things.
What are your hopes for the future?
I want to try to become a driver because my brother-in-law has many customers and he can refer customers to me. It would be long-distance driving, like from Siem Reap to Poipet or Battambang. In a couple of years, I’d like to buy a car. Also, I’d like to buy things in Poipet to sell in Siem Reap.
What should visitors to Siem Reap see and do?
Visitors should see Angkor Wat. When I have friends visit, I take them to meet older people, to see what their lives are like and hear their stories.
What are some good things to eat in Siem Reap?
My favorite is Khmer-style grilled fish and sour fish soup.
