Som Mab

( Position )

Som Mab has been working at Rambutan since 2014. He’s often the first face you see when you enter the resort.

Where are you from?

I’m from Siem Reap. I was born here. My parents are farmers. They plant vegetables and also make baskets. I am the second child in my family. My older brother is a security guard, and, when he has time, he is also a moto dop driver. One of my younger brothers lives and works in a factory that makes plastic in Thailand, another works at a hotel as a waiter, and my youngest brother is still studying. When I was young, I mostly stayed home and studied, or sometimes I would make and fly kites, or sometimes I’d go fishing or find firewood – a simple life.

Now I live in town and share a room with my friend. A normal day is much more busy now than when I was young, with my work and finishing up my thesis project for my degree. I’m studying tourism management at Build Bright University. I’m in my last year and will be done in three months. In my free time—when I have some—I listen to music, read books, and browse the internet.Mostly I read about investment and finance (I like Robert Kiyosaki), or read Chinese proverbs and quotes.

I was a student at EGBOK, and then studied cooking at Paul Dubrule. When I finished, I worked in the kitchen at Asian Square Restaurant for a year, then moved to Rambutan and became a waiter, and then moved to the reception team. Next, I will move to the reservations team. It’s a bit different working at Rambutan than at other places. They support us to study at university or English school to improve our abilities, which makes it easier to get promoted or move to different parts of the hotel.

I want to have own business in the hospitality industry, maybe run my own hotel. If there are too many hotels, then I’ll choose another business. Maybe something in agriculture, like having my own bee farm. But I cannot do only one job. I’d like to open many businesse, like a restaurant and a travel agency. Maybe one day I would like to be a politician, but not until I am 35 or 40. I would also like to be a CEO one day.

When people come to Cambodia, sometime they think it’s not a good country or they don’t much about the country. People only know the temples, but don’t know the other provinces. Maybe in the future I can help change that and help people know more.
