As the bartender and part of the reception team, Sok Sea is a familiar face to many guests. Originally from the Ankor Thom district just outside Siem Reap, he wants to one day open his own store.
Where are you from?
I’m from Angkor Thom district, just outside Siem Reap. I grew up in family of 10, including my parents. My family were farmers – they had a rice field. Now, I live in Siem Reap and have a rice field of my own.
When did you come to Siem Reap?
I came to Siem Reap to study hotel management at university in 2009. I just finished my Bachelor’s degree last year. For the moment, I don’t want to study more at university, but I want to improve my English.
How did you start working at Rambutan?
I knew someone who worked here, so I brought my CV and applied. I started working here in 2010 as part of the maintenance team, but I’ve moved around through the departments. I moved to the restaurant as a server and then became the bartender around 2012. I became part of the reception team in 2016, but I still work at the bar.
What is it like to work at Rambutan?
This was my first job, so I can’t compare. But I think it’s a good place to work, a good location, I like the manager, and I get to meet many tourists from many countries.
What are your hopes for the future?
I have my own rice field, so I will keep working on that, but I would like to open my own shop. I want to sell a mix of everyday things, like a convenience store.
What should visitors to Siem Reap see and do?
They should visit the floating village to see the way people live. They should also see the countryside and the forest to see how people live there. I think, generally, tourists should learn how people live in Cambodia.
What are some good things to eat in Siem Reap?
My favourite food is fried rice with beef lok lak. There are many small, local restaurants in Siem Reap that make it very well.
